Recently, a friend of mine got me started on Beachbody’s Shakeology program. I really love that the nutrition information on the back of the bag so closely resembles my daily multivitamin. Not to mention all the great superfood ingredients that I don’t get in my normal diet! A diet which usually isn’t that great when I’m busy. I admit that it took me quite a few tries to find my favorite flavor and get the mix just right. I have decided finally that one of my problems was adding ice. Every recipe I found called for ice, and that’s how I’d always made smoothies. But the flavor was always so much less than I expected. So now I rarely add ice to smoothies. I just make sure that I’m using at least some frozen ingredients; this keeps it plenty cold and doesn’t dilute the flavor.
Originally I started out with one of the Shakeology starter kits; it had a packet of every flavor that they have available. I decided that vanilla and chocolate were my favorites. And I think they’re probably the most versatile as far is mixing with fruit, veggies, and nut butters.
I don’t use a full scoop (included in the bag). I just mix it so I like it! I also make this all the time for the kids but I leave out the Shakeology powder. It probably would be fine for them, but I don’t know for sure…if nothing else, there’s stuff in there that they’ve never had before.
When I started using Shakeology about six months ago, I had a NutriBullet. Which was fine; it functioned. But I realized a while back that I missed having a powerful full-size blender, not just for smoothie-making, but for general use. So about a month ago I “invested in” a new Ninja blender/processor. And I LOVE it! I got the big set-up, ’cause you know… why not!? Aside from the smoothies that I make in the NutriNinja cups, I’ve whipped cream and made pumpkin pie filling in the food processor bowl (which comes with an actual processor blade AND a plastic blade for mixing and whipping only), and made margaritas in the blender pitcher. The whole shebang was obviously more expensive than just the blender pitcher model, but I love the versatility of the extra blades, bowl, and NutriNinja cups.
I just LOVE the color of this smoothie. You can tell by looking at it that there’s some serious nutrition in there! Speaking of nutrition, if you’re interested in some health and nutrition facts about some of the ingredients, keep reading beyond the recipe. I promise it will motivate you to make a smoothie! I’m always amazed to see the power of whole foods when I take the time to look into it.
Shakeology Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Put the following ingredients in your blender, NutriBullet, or Ninja in this order:
- 3/4 C. fresh (not frozen) banana chunks
- 7 or 8 frozen red cherries
- 7 or 8 frozen whole strawberries
- cover to just above the fruit with milk (regular, soy, almond…your choice)
- 1/2 T. honey (I happen to use only Really Raw)
- 2 heaping tablespoons Vanilla Shakeology (you can leave this out if you don’t use Shakeology…it’s still yummy and good for you!)
If you have a pulse option on your machine, pulse it a few times to break things up. Then blend on high until everything is broken down and creamy! Savor the color…then enjoy!
