I LOVE this time of year! Cool temps, snow flurries (or in our case, freezing rain and power outages) in the air, Christmas lights twinkling… It’s time to spend the evenings watching movies with the kids and sipping hot chocolate. But I stopped buying processed, pre-packaged cocoa mixes a long time ago! I’ve been trying for quite some time to come up with something that was easy to make and could be stored on the counter until it was ready to mix into some hot milk in someone’s cup. I think I finally got it right! And you can adjust the sweetness easily. Here’s what you’ll need:
Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
- 3 C. semi-sweet mini chocolate chips (if you can’t find mini, pulse the regular sized ones in the food processor a couple times before adding the remaining ingredients)
- 1 C. dry milk powder
- 1 C. granulated sugar
- 1/2 C. powdered sugar (you can adjust this up or down, depending on your preference for sweetness)
- 1 C. unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Throw all of these things in the food processor and mix away until it’s well-blended. Store it in a container with a tight-fitting lid so it stays dry. I put mine in a quart jar so the kids have easy access and can fix their own. My preference is 2 tablespoons to 8 oz. of hot milk. The kids don’t like theirs quite as strong. Like the sweetness, you can adjust the “strength” to your liking as well!
Snuggle in with a good movie and enjoy a cup!
